Chunakkara village is situated in Alappuzha district in the Indian state of Kerala extending an area of 1707 hectares 29 ares 65 sqm. Chunakkara is a land blessed with rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Its geographical location is 50km south of District head quarters and the National highway 183 passes through this village over an extent of about 7km.Chunakkara has flourished as a settlement of rich tradition in art, culture and religion and has registered prosperity in trade as well as agriculture. Chunakkara is famous for religious harmony where number of temples, churches and mosques are situated. Thiruvairoor Mahadeva temple situated in Chunakkara is one of the ancient Siva temples in Kerala. Chunakkara RamanKutty, a prolific lyricist who penned some of the biggest hit songs of Malayalam cinema was a native of this village. Chunakkara was considered to be an agriculture based village initially under the control of local landlords. Later the place came under the reign of Marthanda Varma of Travancore Royal family. The name Chunakkara is believed to be originated from the word "chunak" which means small foundation of water or spring, once this place is noticed for.This place is once an abode of Sanskrit scholars, artists, poets and astrologers which enhances the cultural and social status of Chunakkara. Religious practices,cultural art forms and local traditions reaveals the agrarian character once prevailed in this area. The prosperity thus gained through the agricultural practices and various trade activities played a vital role in shaping the socio-economic history of this place. In 1953, during the time of its inception Chunakkara and its neighboring places came under Kollam district. Later it became a part of Alappuzha district when it is formed in 1957.

Demography

Chunakkara is one of the large villages in Mavelikkara Taluk of Alappuzha district with total 5998 families residing. The Chunakkara village has population of 22730 of which 10372 are males while 12358 are females as per Population Census 2011. In Chunakkara village population of children with age 0-6 is 2058 which makes up 9.05 % of total population of village. Average Sex Ratio of Chunakkara village is 1191 which is higher than Kerala state average of 1084. Child Sex Ratio for the Chunakkara as per census is 902, lower than Kerala average of 964. Chunakkara village has higher literacy rate compared to other villages in Kerala. In 2011, literacy rate of Chunakkara village was 95.45 % . In Chunakkara Male literacy stands at 96.81 % while female literacy rate was 94.34 %.

Chunakkara village is situated approximatetly 12km away from Taluk office Mavelikara and 50km from District headquaters. The village extends over a geographical area of 1692 hectares (16.92 square kilometers). The latitude and longitude coordinates are 9.2040° N, 76.6009° E respectively.
