About Village

Oorakam is a small Village in Malappuram District of Kerala State, India. It belongs to North Kerala Division . It is located 8 KM towards west from District head quarters Malappuram. The village office located on Vengara- Malappuram road at Kunnath. It is near to Kunnath juma Masjid. Total area of the village is 2165.5245 Hectares. The village share its boundaries with Panakkad village in east, Othukkungal in south, Vengara and Parappur villages in west and Melmuryi Nediyirippu, Morayur, Kannamangalam villages in north.

Demography

As of 2001 India census, Oorakam had a population of 12589 with 6084 males and 6505 females.

Geography

The village is located between Oorakam mountain range and Kadalundi River. Oorakam mala is the biggest mountain range in this area.

Socio-Economic

The economy of the villagers is good as many are working as emigrants in gulf countries. Many are daily wagers, farmers and at government service.

Ecology

Since the village is in between Oorakam mala and Kadalundi river, the ecology of the village is special. Since a large number of quarries works here, it harms the beauty and ecology of the village. A number of abandoned water logged quarries are here in the village.

Tourism

Mini Ooty is a hill near Arimbra village in Kondotty area which can be accessed from Poolappis Junction on Vengara to Malappuram road. Around 6 km to the peak of the mountain from state highway. Thiruvonamala temple, 2000 years old Jain temple is at the top of the mountain. It is said be the second oldest temple in kerala after Sabari mala.
