About Village

Earlier Cherukunnu village was under Chirakkal Taluk of Malabar district in Madras presidency. Presently, the village is in Kannur taluk in Kannur district in Kerala in India. Cherukunnu, a small town located on Valapattanam-Pappinisseri-Pazhayangadi Road, 20 KM North of Kannur town is best known in its religious places. The name Cherukunnu means a small hill in Malayalam and the place is believed to have derived this name as it is surrounded by small hills.

As of 2011 India Census Cherukunnu had a population 23030 with 10646 males and 12384 females.

Geography

Cherukunnu has number of tiny hills. Greater part of this village is surrounded by backwaters. This village shares border with Kannapuram to the south, Madayi to the north, Mattool to the west, Ezhome and Pattuvam to the east.

Most of the people are Labourers also include Professionals.

Greater part of this village is surrounded by Backwater and little Hills.

Major attractions of Cherukunnu include Annapoorneswari temple (Temple is known for its unique ritual called Annadanam - Food feast), Thavam church (An ancient Roman Catholic church), Oliyankara Juma Masjid ( where a renowned Sufi grave is located). The Thuruth - small islands of Ayiram thengu and Mungam are places of interest known for scenic beauty.
