About Village

The name "Chalakudy" is derived from two words "Yagashala" (temporary settlement for conducting sacrifices) and "koti" (flag). Once Chalakudy was famous all over India as a place for conducting sacrifices. Many "rishis" (including Saptarshis) used to come over here as it was considered as a sacred land. In order to identify these settlements, they hoisted flags next to it. Thus those entire area got its name "yagashalakoti".[citation needed] History also says during the second Chera dynasty, people outside kerala visited Chalakudy to learn vedas and Kalaripayattu from Chukkikulam Shala. These people lived in the banks of Chalakudy River and this accommodation is called Kudi. The combination of these two words Shalakudi is later modified into Chalakudy

Demography

As per 2011 census report, Chalakudy municipality had population of 49,525 of which 23,744 are males while 25,781 are females. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 4574 which is 9.24% of total population of Chalakudy (M). In Chalakudy, Female Sex Ratio is of 1086 against state average of 1084. Moreover, Child Sex Ratio in Chalakudy is around 920 compared to Kerala state average of 964. Literacy rate of Chalakudy city is 97.03% higher than state average of 94.00%. In Chalakudy, Male literacy is around 98.09% while female literacy rate is 96.07%. Chalakudy town has 50.87% Christians, 42.1% Hindus and 6.91% Muslims. Malayalam is the language spoken by the majority in this area. The female population exceeds the male population by a small margin which is a common characteristic throughout the state. The standard of education among the people in the village is really high in comparision to the national average, with a big majority of population manages to complete their high school education

Geography

The place features a tropical monsoon climate almost throughout the year. The region lies in the southwestern coastal state of Kerala, resulting in a tropical climate; there are only minor differences in temperatures between day and night, and over the year.

Socio-Economic

A large cross-section of the population belongs to the middle-lower class in the economical spectrum, the main source of income being mostly agriculture, small scale business, self employment and day to day labour. The society has people belonging to all major religions viz Hinduism, Christianity and Islam living in complete harmony which is a trademark of the state itself and this village is no exception

Ecology

"The village boasts a balanced ecological system with the co-existance of human, botanical and zoological life. The village has lots of greenery towards the interiors and the people lead a life without disturbing the wild and plant life. "

Tourism

The main places of attraction are majorly temples and churches. These religious institutes have decades of history behind them, if not centuries and can be a subject of interest to those passionate about culture and archeology. The place is also blessed with natural scenic beauty just like any other place in the state and the interior places have a lot to be explored and enjoyed
