Vazhoor is a town in Kottayam district in the state of Kerala, India.It is a village, panchayat and block with headquarters at Kodungoor on NH183. Basically an agrarian community inhabits this part, whose income depends on rubber cultivation.

Demography

As of 2011 India census, Vazhoor had a population of 25169 with 12273 males and 12896 females.

Geography

Vazhoor Village Office is located at Kodungoor Junction on Kottayam - Kumali Road. It is surrounded by Chirakkadavu and Cheruvally villages in Kanjirapally taluk, Pampadi, Kuroppada and Anicad villages in Kottayam taluk and Kangazha and Vellavoor villages in Changanassery taluk.National Highway NH 183 passes through Vazhoor.

Socio-Economic

Vazhoor is a village famous for its communal harmony. Hindus, Muslims and Christians live as brothers and sisters. Most of Mr. Chathumenon s family, who first translated the Bible into Malayalam and later adopted the name Josephine, live in the Vazhoor village area. Rubber cultivation is the main source of livelihood for the people here.Vazhoor have a number of educational institutions. SVRNSS College is a Kerala Govt. aided college run by the Nair Service Society and it is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala. The college was started in 1965. The nearby campus includes the SVRNSS Higher secondary school and the SVRNSS primary school. Government High School Kodungoor and Government LP school are located near the block headquarters at Kodungoor. Thiruvalla Medical Mission Hospital, Kodungoor. A Primary Health Centre, Govt veterinary & Govt. Homeo Dispensary are situated in the town. A few ayurvedic clinics and an allopathic clinic are situated in Vazhoor.

Ecology

Rubber cultivation is the main source of livelihood for the people here.In addition, cocoa and bananas are mainly cultivated.

Kodungoor Devi Temple,is situated in vazhoor is a popular pilgrimage center for Ayyappa devotees during the Sabarimala season
