About Village

Shastamangalam villiage is located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city and comprises the whole of Shastamangalam and Pangode and part of Poojapura, Kanjirampara, Vazhuthacaud and Kowdiar wards of Thiruvananthapuram corporation.

Demography

Sasthamangalam is a village of 59,177 (according to 2011 census )residents and among this 28758 are males and 30419 are females. The resultant sex ratio of the village is 1000:1057. The literary rate of the village is 91.45%. Residents belonging to several religious sects lives in the village

Geography

The surrounding villages are Thycaud, Kowdiar, Peroorkada, Vattiyurkavu, and Thirumala. The nearby cities are Thampanoor , Palayam, Kowdiar, and Vazhuthakadu. One of the major rivers in Kerala , Killiyar flows through the village.

Socio-Economic

Based on the socio economic status ,the population can be sorted into upper,middle, lowermiddle and lowerclass in the ratio of 20:35:25:20 respectively. Majority of the working class are government officials, business owners including a fair share of IT professionals and menial labourers with a small population of agricultural labourers. A section of total population resides in apartment complexes. V.K.Papu Nagar in Kanjirampara is a densely populated housing area with a large share of lower income class group of people. Govt. offices including NCC Directorate DGP Office along with Raj Bhavan, Pangod Military Camp and Juvenile Correction Home are situated in this Village. Former CM Shri. A K Anthony, Shri Ummen Chandy and Former Chief Secretary Smt. Nalini Neto and Smt. Padma Ramachandran are also residents of this Village. Official Residences like Manmohan Bungalow Chief Secretary s Bungalow and Raj Bhavan are also situated here. Major religious locations are Poojapura saraswathi mandapam, Vellayambalam church and Shastamangalam mosque. Latin Catholic bishop house also situated here. Major hospitals are Government Ayurvedic maternity hospital poojapura, SK hospital and Ramakrishna mission Hospital.

Ecology

Most of the terrain are plain. The village is devoid of EFL or any other housing restriction except the portions belonging to green belt of killiyar river banks. Housing is also prohibited alongside of pangode military camp. The villiage also has a live paddy field which are rare in the city limits and is owned by udiyanur mudipura devi temple.

Tourism

The villiage houses the cultural venue, Tagore theatre which is the main stage for cultural programmes in the city, like Soorya festival and IFFK. Several clubs including Trivandrum club, Sri Moolam club, Tennis club , Women’s club and Freemansion club are situated here. Poojapura ground which holds a large number of festivities during special occasions are also situated in the village.
