Thrissilery Shiva Temple

Thrissilery Shiva Temple, Wayanad A popular pilgrim centre in Wayanad, the Thrissilery Shiva Temple is one of the oldest temples in Kerala. The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva. The temple is linked to the renowned Thirunelli Temple in Wayanad. It is built to unique architectural proportions, has intricate carvings, and provides a calm and composed ambience. You can also see a small shrine of Jala Durga, located in a water body that originates from the Papanashini River near Thirunelli.

About Village

Thrissilery is a village in Wayanad district in the state of Kerala, India. Thrissilery village was formed in 1982 by dividing Thrirunelly village. Now there are two revenue villages in Thirunelly Grama Panchayat area. Until 1940, Thirunelly Panchayath had only upper caste landlords and their dependent Scheduled Tribes. The coffee plantations started by foreigners in the panchayat later became a model for others. Immigration from Travancore, started in 1941. With the arrival of migrant farmers, farming also started on the land. Thirunelly Panchayat is a small, hilly area surrounded by Narinirangi hills and Brahmagiri hills. Most of the forest area is part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. 45% of the population of the panchayat are Scheduled Tribes. Thirunelly Grama Panchayat was a village of nationally renowned sporting talents. O.P. Jaisha, an athlet participarted in the marathon at the 2016 Rio Olympics, was born and raised in Thrissilery village.

As of 2001 India census, Thrissilery had a population of 15731 with 7778 males and 7953 females.

Geography

The area of Thrissilery village is 51.98 sq. Km. Thrissilery Village is bounded on the north by Thirunelly Village, on the south by Pulpally Village, Payyampilly Village, Mananthavady Village, on the east by the state of Karnataka, Thirunelly Village and on the west by Mananthavady Village. Nagarhola National Park is located on the border of the village. The main occupation of the people is agriculture. Two inter-state highways pass through Kattikulam, the village headquarters.

Socio-Economic

The agricultural lands of Thirunelly Panchayath, were initially in the hands of landlords, Devaswom and Revenue Department. It was through land reforms that agricultural land came into the hands of small farmers. The agricultural sector, which was confined to paddy cultivation, started in 1941 and expanded to cash crops with the arrival of migrants.

Ecology

Thrissilery Village is blessed with beautiful landscapes. Most of the areas in the village have fertile soil suitable for various crops.The rainfall here is less comparing to other parts of Wayanad. 72% of the total area is forest land. The forests of the region are rich in rare and medicinal plants.

Thrissilery village is a place of natural beauty. Tourists can enjoy the journey through the State Highways passing through the middle of forest. The Kabani River, one of the rivers flowing to Eastern side , and Kuruva Island are the tourist attractions near the village.
