About Village

Alappad is a village located in Karunagappally Taluk of Kollam district in Kerala State. Around 5229 families reside in Alappad village. There are eight major areas included in this Village. Vellanathuruthu, Pandarathuruthu, Cheriazheekkal, Alappad, Kuzhithura, Parayakadavu, Srayikkad, Azheekkal-Ayiramthengu are those eight major areas from south to north respectively. Alappad village is a ward of the panchayat of the same name. Often, the whole panchayat is referred as Alappad. The size of the area is about 8.49 square kilometer.

Demography

As per the Census India 2011, Alappad village has population of 21655 of which 10689 are males and 10966 are females. The population of children between age 0-6 is 1999 which is 9.23% of total population. The sex-ratio of Alappad village is around 1026 compared to 1084 which is average of Kerala state. The literacy rate of Alappad village is 86.71% .

Geography

Alappad is a coastal village in the Kollam district of the Indian state Kerala. It is situated on a narrow strip of land sandwiched between the Arabian Sea and the TS Canal – the village is approximately 16 km long and its narrowest point is as thin as 33 meters. Connect to the mainland is by bridge as well as by country boat ferries, operated by the Panchayat and private parties. Until recently there was only one bridge at the southern point of the land strip, but after the 2004 Tsunami, two other bridges have been constructed. Alappad village is a ward of the panchayat of the same name. Often, the whole panchayat is referred as Alappad; however, the panchayat actually consists of various wards/places such as Azheekal, Srayikkadu, Kuzhithura, Parayakadavu, Cheriazheekkal, Pandarathuruthu, Vellanathuruthu . Portions of the village were damaged during the 2004 Tsunami. Alappad was the worst-affected village in Kerala – several people lost their lives. After the tragedy, the state government realized need for more bridges, and constructed one bridge at northern Azheekal, and another one at Cheriyazhekkal .

Socio-Economic

Fishing is the major job of the inhabitants of Alappad Village. Most of the People meet the both ends of their necessities of life by Fishing. Majority of the people belong to Hindu - Dheevara Community. The second major community is Christian - Latin Catholics. The third major community is Hindu - Ezhava. There are a very few Muslim, SC families are also residing at Alappad. Communal Harmony is a significant feature of this Village. The standard of education and economic status are the same as the status of the State .

Ecology

The coastal sand dunes in Alappad Village are rich in minerals ilmenite, rutile, zircon, monazite, leucoxene (brown ilmenite), sillimanite and garnet.

Mata Amritanandamayi, renowned Hindu Sanyasin, spiritual leader and philanthropist was born in Parayakadavu. Mata Amritanandamayi Math is located in Parayakadavu.
