About Village

Clappana is a small village in Karunagappally Taluk in Kollam District. The Village is situated in the North-West side of Kollam District. This village shares boundary with Alappuzha district. Amrita School of Engineering (ASE) - Amrithapuri , St. Joseph U P School which is more than 100 year old are located in this village.

Demography

The Clappana Census Village has population of 22,250 of which 10,428 are males while 11,822 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 2138 which is 9.61 % of total population of Clappana. In Clappana Census village, Female Sex Ratio is of 1134 against state average of 1084. Literacy rate of Clappana Village is 93.85 % lower than state average of 94.00 %. In Clappana, Male literacy is around 96.07 % while female literacy rate is 91.93 %.

Geography

Clappana Village is situated in the East Side of T S Canal ( Thiruvananthapuram - Shoranur Canal) , and south of Alappuzha district.

Socio-Economic

Inhabitants of the Village include fishermen, labourers , private employees and Govt. employees. People in the Village live in peace and harmony irrespective of caste/creed or any other discrimination. Clappana is the birthplace of two eminent persons, first one is K. O. Aysha Bai, (25 October 1926 – 28 October 2005) was a Communist politician from south India. She was the first Deputy Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly (6 May 1957 – 31 July 1959). Aysha Bai was the first Muslim women to rise to public fame in modern Kerala. And the second one is Dr. Christy Fernandez, a Former IAS Officer and Secretary to the Government of India and the President of India, is currently the Chairman of Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation Limited.

Ecology

Various types of agricultural products are cultivating here. Coconut, tapioca, plantain are main agricultural crops. People also engaged in fish farming as the village is bounded by backwaters.

Tourism

Ayiramthengu Mangrove forest ,which is situated in Alappad village shares border with Clappana is a best place for tourists. Another attractions of the place are an ancient church built in the period the Portuguese, St. George Church - Clappana, Puthutheruve Muslim Jamaath, which is built in Chinese vasthu vidya , Anandeswaram Mahadeva Sree Parvathy Temple, where the Aalthara was made by thousand year old rock. All these places are attracted by number of tourists thorughout the year.
