About Village

Thrissur village is situated in Thrissur Taluk of Thrissur District. It is the core of Thrissur town having boundaries shared by Chembukkavu village on east, Poonkunnam, Peringavu villages on north, Ayyanthole, Aranaattukara villages on west and Koorkkanchery, Chiyyaram villages on south. The center of the village is Vadakkum Nathan Siva Temple from where the name Thri-siva-peroor derived which literally means ‘The place with the name of Lord Siva’. Thri-siva-peroor again reduced to Thrissur. During British rule in India it was known as Trichur. Thrissur is an important cultural center and is known as the Cultural Capital of Kerala.

Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and Kerala Lalitha Kala Akademi head quarters are in this village. Thrissur railway station, Punkunnam railway station, KSRTC bus station, North bus stand, Sakthan Thampuran bus stand, Rama nilayam, Regional Theatre, KSFE head office, The South indian Bank Head office, Mini Civil Station with a cluster of Government offices including Thrissur Taluk Office, Thrissur Municipal Corporation Office, AGs office, ESI Regional office, Head Post Office, Income tax Aayakar Bhavan, Jawahar Bala Bhavan are situated in this village. Also there are a few major hospitals like Aswini hospital, Thrissur Co-operative hospital, Sun Medical and research center are there in this village. Schools like CMS school, Government model VHSS & HSS for girls are there in this village.

Ecology

Thrissur Village is the center of Thrissur Municipal Corporation. There are a few places with historical and cultural importance. Vadakkechira, Padinjarechira, Vanchikkulam, Pallikkulam are famous ponds in this village. Vadakkumnathan temple is situated on a small hill. Surrounding the temple is Thekkinkadu maidan. The road surrounding the Thekkinkadu maidan is known as swaraj round

Tourism

Thrissur Pooram is the main tourist attraction of this village. Ilanjithara melam(an assembly of percussion performance artists held at the shadow of the Ilanji tree at the courtyard of the Vadakkunnathan Temple), Kudamatam (Changing of umbrellas), Pooram vedikkett (fire works show), Pooram exhibition are main events of Thrissur Pooram. Pulikkali(Leopard game), Kummattikkali are events associated with Onam festival. Bon Nathale event is also a famous attraction of this village. A lot of temples are there in this village. Vadakkumnathan Siva Temple, Paramekkavu Temple, Thiruvambadi Temple are important temples in this village. Sakthan Thanburan Palace near North bus stand is also a tourist place having archaeological importance. There are three statues of Rajas of Kochin in this village. Sakthan Thanpuran statue is situated near Sakthan Thampuran Bus stand, Sri Sir Ramavarma Thampuran Statue on Round east and Sir Sri Ramavarma Thampuran Statue on MO Road.
