About Village

Nellaya village is located at Ottappalam Taluk of Palakkad district in the state of Kerala, India. It is situated 25km away from sub-district headquarter Ottappalam and 45km away from district headquarter Palakkad. During British rule Nellaya village comes under Valluvanand Taluk of erstwhile Malabar district. Nellaya village covers the whole area of local body Nellaya Grama Panchayath, having 19 wards. Nellaya village comprises of five desams; Nellaya, Ezhuvanthala, Marayamangalam, Pattisseri and Irumbalasseri. Nellaya comes under the Parliament consistuency of Palakkad and Legislative Assembly constituency of Shornur. The deveopment block is Ottapalam.

Demography

As per census of 2001 and 2011 the population of Nellaya village were 32,056 and 36,146 respectively. Considering the population growth, the present population will be around 40,000. As per 2011 census, the population of children with age 0-6 is 5,024, which makes up 13.90 percentage of total population of the village. Average sex ratio of Nellaya village is 1140, which is higher than the state average of 1,084. Moreover, child sex ratio is 985, which is higher than the state average of 964. Majority of population belongs to Hindu and Muslim communities.

Geography

The total geographical area of Nellaya village is 2745 hectares [ 27.45 Sq.Km]. The village is bounded on the east by Cherppulassery village, south by Chalavara village, west by Vallapuzha and Kulukkallur villages of Pattambi taluk, and on the north by Kunthi River and Elamkulam village of Perinthalmanna taluk, Malappuram district. PWD road to Cherpulassery - Pattambi, Cherpulassery - Koppam, Nellaya city Junction - Mavundirikkadavu and Nellaya Krishnappadi to Shornur are the important roads passes through Nellaya village. The nearest railway station is Shoranur Junction, which is 12 Kms. away. Nearest airport is Karipur International Airport. Cherppulassery is the nearest town.

Socio-Economic

Most of the village is rural area. Majority of people involved in agricultural and allied activities. Paddy is the main crop. Cash crops like coconut, pepper [mixed crops] and plantation crop like rubber, arecanut etc. are also cultivated. A large number of people from Nellaya village is working at Gulf countries. The major educational institutions functioning at Nellaya village is Government Higher Secondary School, Marayamangalam, Government High School and U P School Marayamangalam, MTI Central School, Pottachira, and 15aided primary schools etc. are also functioning within Nellaya village. Anwaria Arabic College is a famous instituion functioning at Nellaya village. As per 2011 census, the literacy rate is 93.91 percentage.

Ecology

The climate is pleasant in all seasons except summer. There is sufficient rainfall . Paddy fields and hilly areas are seen.

Tourism

Murippara, a hilly area at Ezhuvanthala, Nellaya is a tourist location, attracting demostic tourists. The hill gives a mesmerising view of the surrounding area.
