About Village

Karunagappally was an ancient buddhist cite. There was a Buddha Bhikshu named Karinagan who lived in Karunagapplly. He later became known as Pallikkal Puthran (as Karunagappally is situated on the banks of Pallikkal river) hence the name Karunagappally.

Demography

According to 2011 census of india , total karunagappally population is 428802. In this 204250 are males and 224552 are females. Population of karunagappally in 2020 is 514562.( literate people are 361992), out of these 175066 are males and 186926 are females.

Geography

Karunagappally village covers an area of 876.74.51 hectors. The geographical coordinates for Karunagappally are 9311N 76.324E.

Socio-Economic

Karunagappally used to be an agrarian economy until the late 19 th century with coconut ,banana, paddy etc as the main crops grown.With the rapid urbanization and the consequent pressure on land the reliance on agriculture has dwindled.Fishing forms the major source of livelihood for coast dwellers.

Ecology

Karunagappally is the fastest developing regions in Kollam. Many of the prominent business centers had their branches in Karunagappally village, especially textiles. Karnagappally is known for high background radiation from thorium containing Monazite sand in some coastal areas.

Tourism

The main tourist attraction is the house boat facility in Alumkadavu which is close to Karunagappally town. Nowadays Houseboat, Safari boat and Speed boat services are operated from Kannety boat club which is 1km apart from Karunagappally KSRTC bus stand.
