Kottakkal literally the Land of the Fort is a municipality in Malappuram district in Kerala, it is a part of Malappuram metropolitan area and a growing city in Kerala.The town is best known for the Arya Vaidya Sala, one of the top Ayurvedic health centres of the world.Kottakkal is also a major growing commercial, educational, and healthcare hub in South Malabar.The town lies on Mumbai-Kanyakumari National Highway 66.

Geography

The National Highway 66 separates the municipality from nearby Edarikkode Panchayath on some part in the west. This is an Eranadan town located 12 km south-west of Malappuram, the district headquarters, and 12 km from Tirur the taluk headquarters , In brief Kottakkal Stands in the middle of both end of the district

Agriculture was the main source of income this town , But now the situation has changed , Hundreds of people are working in Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakkal , Several other Ayurveda institutions have also emerged in this town , People all over the World visited Kottakkal for treatment which has added strength to the economy of the place All sought of people have been benefited from the ayurveda institutions in and around Kottakkal

Ecology

The ecology of the ayurveda city is not much different from other parts of the district . Being the centre of Ayurveda a demonstration garden is set up on an eight acre plot at Kottakkal. by AVS Kottakkal A live collection of 700 scientifically identified plants, a herbarium and a museum for selected items of correctly identified herbal ingredients are maintained in this facility. this herbal garden

Tourism

Kottakkal is known for its ayurvedic heritage, Arya Vaidya Sala. Adding to the cultural heritage, Kottakkal Pooram, the temple festival, is being celebrated over seven days during the month of march april every year The Kizhakke Kovilakam, the eastern branch of the royal family of Zamorin resided, is located at Kottakkal During the Malabar Rebellion of 1921, a Mappila gang under the leadership of Odayappurath Chekkutty from Kalpakanchery protected the Kizhake Kovilakam and the Arya Vaidya Sala at Kottakkal. Vaidyaratnam P. S. Warrier, who is also the founder of renowned Arya Vaidya Sala and Kottakkal Natya Sangham at Kottakkal, (presently PSV NatyaSangham ) provided the entire shelter and protection for the orphaned Mappila families when the British army arrested Mappila household men
