About Village

Thazhakara village is one of the 15 villages in Mavelikara Taluk. Thazhakara, Vazhuvadi, Kunnam, Eravankara, Akkanattukara and Kallumala are the local places of Thazhakara village. The local people have two opinions about the history of the name as “Thazhakara”. When all these places were under the majestic rule of Edappally Swaroopam, this places was known as “Thalakkara” since this area was at the top level socially, economically, culturally, educationally and geographically and later the name become “Thazhakara”.Another version is that during the period of Cheraman Perumal, a group of people connected with handicrafts came to this area and stayed here. Beautiful decorative materials were woven out of the leaves of Pandanus plants and these were taken to the native place of Cheraman Perumal. The dried leaves of pandanus are called as “Thazha” and from this period onwards this place was called “Thazhakara”. Another story about the orgin of name of Thazhakara is that High lands in this area known as “Melekara” and low lands known as ” Thazhekara” and later it has been changed to “Mavelikara” and “Thazhakkara”.Achan Kovil river passes through northern side of Thazhakara.

Geography

Thazhakara is an agricultural village. The soil is clay mixed with gravel (Coarse sand). On the banks of paddy fields the soil is alluvial. In most parts of Thazhakara, laterite soil and sand are seen. Paddy, coconut, Rubber and tapioca are important cultivation. The average production of paddy is 1800kgs. per Hectare. Around half portion of village is covered with paddy fields. Among them, famous and largest paddy field is “Thazhakara puncha”. These paddy fields are also part of Upper Kuttanad. Thazhakara village has a lot of channels, ponds and canals. Besides this Pampa Irrigation Canal passes through almost all areas of the village.

Socio-Economic

Punchaman Madom which is connected with the history of Kadamattah Kathanar is also situated here. The Eravankara Unnithans who were the spokesmen and exponents of Kathakali songs earned world fame in Kathakali songs in the early period of its inception when the Kathakali Movement took shape and Sri. Parappurth K.E, Mathai who authored novels like Aranazhikaneram, Panitheeratha Veedu, Ninamanija Kalppadukal etc. In Malayalam and who earned fame and recogtnition as the novelist of lay men are the proud men are the proud sons of Thazhakara village. Religious and worship places The Subrahmanya Swamy Temple and Karayamvattom Hanuman temple in Thazhakara, Sri Kirathan kavu Siva temple, Panayannaru kavu Devi temple and SNDP Gurumandiram (Bhajana madom) in Vazhuvadi, Kunnam Sridharma Sastha Kshethram and Karimpinkav murthi-Pnachavila Devi temple in Kunnam , Thalelkavu Devi Tample, Malamuttam Siva Temple and Andeswaram Siva temple in Eravankara, Akkanattukara Akkanattukara Siva temple in Akkanatturakara are famours Hindu Religious temple and worship Centres in Thazhakara village. Marhoma Church Thazhakara, Malankara Siryan Seminary Church, Vazhuvadi Basalious Orthodox Church, Kunnam St.George Orthodx Church, Eravankara Marthoma Church and CSI Church Kallumala are famours Christian Churches and worship centres. No Mosque muslim worship centres in Thazhakara village. These religious centres of Thazhakara are the symbols of hundres of years heritage and social backgrounds. The Mavelikara-Sabarimala road passes through Thazhakara village. “Pottamel kadavu” which is connected with Sabarimala road .
