Payyannur, is a Village and Municipal town and a Taluk in Kannur district of Kerala, India. The Village is situated on the banks of the Perumba River. Payyannur derives its name from the renowned Sri Subrahmanya Swami Temple located here. Payyan is an appellation of Lord Subrahmanya and ooru means town or place. Thus Payyannur means the land of Lord Subrahmanya. In the Renaissance, Payyanur was known to English sailors as Delyn, named after the nearby hill of Ezhimala. Payyannur Pavithram or Pavithra Mothiram is the particular ring worn during performing Vedic or holy rituals or during the "pithrubali" (ceremony performed for the well-being of the forefathers or departed souls) in the Hindu tradition. Payyannur is known for astrology and is home to several eminent astrologers. It has been a hub of astrology for many centuries.

Demography

According to the 2011 Indian census, Payyannur had a population of 72,111, with males constituting 46% of the population and females 54%. Payyannur has an average literacy rate of 94.08%. This is higher than the national average of 94.00%. Male literacy is 97.02%, and female literacy is 91.60%. In Payyannur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Geography

Payyannur is located at coordinates 12.1°N 75.2°E. It has an average elevation of 16 metres (51 feet).

Socio-Economic

Payyannur is one of several extent ancient civilized places in Kerala. The northern town of Kerala claims a rich recorded history. The archaeological remains excavated from Payyannur and nearby places prove the existence of a city in this area centuries ago.

Ecology

The Kavvayi Backwater, located near Payyannur, is the third largest backwaters in Kerala and the largest one in north Kerala. Locally called as Kavvayi Kayal or the backwaters of Kavvayi, this lesser known lake of northern Kerala is fed by five rivers viz. River Kavvayi and its tributary streams Kankol, Vannathichal, Kuppithodu, and Kuniyan.

Tourism

The Kavvayi Backwaters in the Kannur district of Kerala form the largest Lake in the Malabar region (North Kerala) and the third largest in Kerala. It is formed by the estuaries of the Thejaswini, Karingode and the Perumbra rivers. The 20 km long Lake extends from Cheruvathur in the north and Ezhimala in the south. A barrier island separates the lake from the Arabian Sea. The Kavvayi Lake has an opening towards the Arabian Sea at its northern side in Azhithala.
