Poonjar is a small Indian town located on the eastern side of Kottayam district in Kerala state, India. Before the independence of India, Poonjar had been the part of Travancore princely state. Pala, Teekoy, Kanjirappally, and Erattupetta are the nearest towns and villages of Poonjar. Poonjar is a place of historic importance. Poonjar, a town at the foothills of Western Ghats, was the capital of Poonjar Kingdom.
Demography
Poonjar falls in Kottayam district situated in Kerala state, with a population 6873. The male and female populations are 3411 and 3462 respectively. The size of the area is about 11.96 square kilometer.
Geography
Geographically Poonjar is divided into Poonjar Thekkekara, Poonjar Vadakkekkara and Poonjar Nadubhagam villages. Two main tributaries of Meenachil river originate in Poonjar hills and join at Erattupetta. There are numerous waterfalls and rivulets in the hills. Kunnonny, Adivaram, Pathambuzha, Kaippally are some of the nearest villages.
Tourism
The Poonjar Palace is a beautiful heritage site located at the Meenachil Taluk in the Kottayam district of Kerala. Stands as a testimony to the glorious regal magnificence of a bygone era, this palace is a wonderful collection of so many antiques and different furniture types. There is a temple near the palace which is truly a replica of the Madurai Meenakshi Temple. The sculptures on the walls of this temple narrate the stories from the Puranas. Poonjar is also home to some of the oldest churches like the St. Marys church Poonjar, St Josephs church Maniamkunnu, etc.
