About Village

Kavalam village is located on the eastern borders of Alappuzha District , on the banks of Vembanadu Lake and the river Manimalayar. In older days village name was Chennamkary, later the name changed in to Kavalam by adding more areas from adjacent villages , Veliyanadu and Pulincunnoo. On formation of Kunnumma village some portion of the village became the part of that village The Manimala river flows through the village to merge into Vembanad Lake. The area is interspersed with the kayals (canals), thodu and lakes. The lakes and kayals are filled with flocks of ducks, and in summer the rice paddies of the village turn golden. The natural , beautiful landscape and environment has been used as a location by many film makers. Kuttanadu including Kavalam is historically important in the ancient history of South India and is the major rice producer in the state. The major occupation in Kavalam is farming, with rice the most important agricultural product. . Large farming areas near Vembanadu Lake were reclaimed from the lake. reclamation was carried out mainly from the shallow part of the Vembanadu Lake or from the periphery of the Manimala River. These reclamation constituted small areas of paddy fields called padasekharams and vast areas called kayal nilam. Well known diplomate, historian and administrator Sardar KM Panicker, Modern poet Dr. K. Ayyappa Panicker, Dramatist and Folklorist Kavalam Narayana Panicker, Singer Kavalam Sreekumar , Writer Kavalam Viswanatha Pilla, Folklore artist Kavalam Rambha are some of the famous persons from this village Kavalam was the venue of many agitations of farmers and agricultural labors which leads to land reforms. Earlier branch units of SNDP Yogam is organised in Kuttanadu. Out of this 2nd and 3rd branches are in this village

Kavalam is a large village located in Kuttanad Taluka of Alappuzha district, Kerala with total 3142 families residing. The Kavalam village has population of 13089 of which 6433 are males while 6656 are females as per Population Census 2011. In Kavalam village population of children with age 0-6 is 1359 which makes up 10.38 % of total population of village. Average Sex Ratio of Kavalam village is 1035 which is lower than Kerala state average of 1084. Child Sex Ratio for the Kavalam as per census is 975, higher than Kerala average of 964. Kavalam village has higher literacy rate compared to Kerala. In 2011, literacy rate of Kavalam village was 97.72 % compared to 94.00 % of Kerala. In Kavalam Male literacy stands at 98.54 % while female literacy rate was 96.94 %.

Geography

Kavalam village is well known for its vast paddy fields and geographical peculiarities. As a Kuttanadan village the region has the lowest altitude in India, and is one of the few places in the world where farming is carried on around 1.2 to 3.0 metres (4 to 10 ft) below sea level. Socio-Economic

People in Kavalm village are mostly farmers (paddy)and agricultural labors. People also doing fishing, kakka (molluska) harvesting and construction labor for their lively hood. The main agricultural product is rice. Pisci culture is also a main function
