Pazhassi Dam

The Pazhassi Dam also called Kulur Barrage is a stone masonry diversion structure in Kannur district, Kerala, India. It is named after king Pazhassi Raja, a patriot who died a heroic death in the war. The dam is constructed across the west flowing Bavali river near Veliyambra. It was commissioned by Prime Minister Morarji Desai in 1979. It mainly functions as an irrigation dam, serving a command area of 11,525 hectares (28,480 acres) in Iritty taluks of the Kannur District. The water from this dam also meets the drinking water requirement of Kannur district.

About Village

Chavassery is a village located in Iritty Taluk of Kannur district in Kerala .Chavassery village is surrounded by hills, slopes, rivers, streams and plains and is lush green. The Chavassery Village Office Building, about 5 km east of Mattannur, opposite the Chavassery Government Higher Secondary School, was inaugurated on 23-06-1995 by the then Revenue Minister Shri KM Mani.

As per the Census India 2011, Chavassery village has population of 29328 of which 14438 are males and 14890 are females. The population of children between age 0-6 is 3180 which is 10.84% of total population. The sex-ratio of Chavassery village is around 1031 compared to 1084 which is average of Kerala state. The literacy rate of Chavassery village is 80.19% out of which 82.29% males are literate and 78.15% females are literate. There are 1.32% Scheduled Caste (SC) and 14.86% Scheduled Tribe (ST) of total population in Chavassery village.

Chavassery village in midland region, lying between the mountains and the low lands, is made up of undulating hills and valleys. This is an area of intense agricultural activity.

THE PEOPLE ARE ENGAGED IN DIFFERENT OCCUPATIONS. MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE ARE FARMERS. THEY ARE CULTIVATING COCONUT, PADDY, VEGITABLES, PLANTAINS , RUBBER ETC
