About Village

Vekkalam village was a part of Kottayam taluk which was a part of old Malabar district. Later it became a part of Thalassery taluk after the formation of Kerala state

Demography

The village has a population of about 15,000 and is inhabited by Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Paniya and Kuriya tribes, which belong to the Scheduled Tribes of Hinduism, still exist here. There are about ten tribal colonies in this village

Geography

The village is located in the eastern hilly region of Thalassery taluk. It is bordered by Manathana and Vellarvalli villages in North Iritti taluk, Tolambra and Kolayad village in Thalassery taluk in the west, Kolayad village in South Thalassery taluk and Kanichchar village in East Iritti taluk. The Kannavam forest covers many parts of the village. The Village Office is located at the foothills of the Periya Pass, the main road from Wayanad to Kannur District. Most of the village is hilly and mountainous along the Western Ghats.

Socio-Economic

The village is home to a tribal community working in the agricultural sector, the Ezhava Christian community who migrated from Travancore and the Nair community, the traditional landowners. This is an area that is important for the agricultural sector

Ecology

The village is located in the foothills of the Western Ghats in the Kannavam Forest. It is an area where wildlife roams freely. During the monsoon season, heavy rains and fog can be seen

Tourism

The foothills of the Periya Pass are soothing to the eyes of the tourists and the Nidum Puramchal St. Sebastian Church, Aryaparambu Fatima Mata Church, Kallu Muthirakkunnu St. Jude Church, Erayikolli Muthappan Mopura and Koottakulam Kavu attract tourists.
