Vizhinjam is a village in Neyyattinkara Taluk in Thiruvananthapuram District. It is the only village in this Taluk which belongs to Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The population and population density are very high. It comes under Kovalam Legislative Assembly Constituency. Resurvey was completed in this village in 1994. This village contains lands coming under ReSurvey Block Number 14. Total area is 1127 hectares. Most of the places in this village are plane areas. Ponds, thodu, canals and seashore are also present. Mukkola in Vizhinjam village is the birth place of Mahatma Ayyankali, a famous social reformer. This village shares some portion of its boundary with the Arabian Sea. This village boasts of Kovalam beach, which is world famous for its serene beauty and attracts many foreign tourists. Other famous beaches in this village are Light House Beach, Hawwah Beach and Samudra Beach. The Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport, also known as the Vizhinjam Port and the Port of Trivandrum, is a port that as of 2021 is under construction on the Arabian Sea coast at Vizhinjam Village. It is the Deepest Port in India having natural draft depth of 24m.

Demography

Total population of this village is 20714 with 10277 males and 10437 females as per 2011 Census Report. The population of this village includes mainly farmers, daily labourers, small-scale traders and fishermen. The majority of the people are middle-class and belong to normal living standards.

The majority of the people in this village are farmers, daily labourers, small-scale traders and fishermen. They belong to normal economic living standards. This village comprises plenty of small-scale trading shops, hotels, schools, religious institutions and tourist spots. Lots of beach resorts are located near the Kovalam beach area. Many luxurious hotels and resorts are present here like the Halcyon Castle, which is popularly known as Kovalam Palace.

Tourism

Kovalam Beach is a world-famous tourist spot. Other famous beaches include Light House Beach, Hawwah Beach and Samudra Beach. Kovalam Palace and Kovalam Light House are other major attractions. Halcyon Castle, which is popularly known as Kovalam Palace was once the summer retreat of the erstwhile Travancore royal family. This is now in the ownership of a private company and has been transformed into a luxurious hotel which attracts mans tourists. This is one of the world-famous historical castle-turned-hotels in India. A monument of Mahatma Ayyankali is situated at Mukkola, which is his birth place. The Vizhinjam rock-cut cave temple is believed to be one of the earliest rock-cut cave temples in Kerala which dates back to 8th century. This rock cut cave has been a protected monument under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India since 1965.
