About Village

Mannamkandam village, which was formed on the 1st November 1956, furnishes the western boundary of Devikulam Taluk. “Mannamkandam”derived its name from the words ‘mannan and kandam, which means wet land belongs to the ‘mannan’ people, a prominent tribe present in this area from the distant past. Earlier in the pre independence era, this village formed part of Kuttamangalam Pakuthi (Village) of Moovattupuzha Taluk. The village office is located at Adimaly, a small town, hailed as the Gateway to Munnar, in the NH 85. Majority of the earlier population belonged to Mannan and Muthuvan tribe. The 1950’s witnessed mass migration of people from the neighbouring districts to this area under various government programs for settlement of marginalized agricultural workers’ family namely “Grow More Food programme” and “High Range Colonisation Scheme”. The uninterrupted waves of migration during the subsequent years added to the total population. As per the 2011 census, the total population is 10593 consisting of 20270 men and 20323 women. Initially the main crop was rice besides pepper and cardamom. During 80’s the rice production came down and the people’s interest shifted to cash crops like cardamom and pepper. The initial years of 21st century opened the doors for tourism, which now plays the back bone of the village economy.
